Adjusting pre '29 brakes

I'm in the process of adjusting the brake rods on an early brake system with the split cross shaft. The rod from the pedal is slotted as apposed to the fixed ends on the later system. I tried using the brake adjusting fixture but I'm not getting the right results. I realize there are a lot more variables with this system but it shouldn't be that difficult. Les Andrews book does not cover the early system. What have you discovered that works?

TK in LA , I did a 28 sport coupe this summer . I replaced the brake drums and all shoes and any other part that needed replacing or rebuilding. I adjusted the brakes by the Les Andrews method . I had to push really hard to get them to stop as fast as it should , I finally realised that the linkage on the cross shaft was binding. I drilled a small hole above the linkages in the little cap above them so I could get some oil where needed and the brakes worked GREAT! Bubby Sharp in KY

Thanks Buddy! That's what these feel like. When I adjust the rods I have the problem of the rod pushing the cross shaft back because of the elongated slot in the actuator rod from the pedal. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks again!

T K I have a 28 phaeton with this brake system . the brake cross shaft must be kept centered in the mounting brackets on the frame. I use wood wedges to hold the shaft in place while I adjust the brakes. The shaft will remain centered after the adjustment. Tom
