Adjustable Tappets Base Diameter Info Needed

I'm wondering if the double lock adjustable lifters on a rebuilt engine a cousin bought are right. It is a B engine and the lifter base looks tiny compared to original. I know I've been told to only put the single lock type in. I looked at the cam in the rebuild and can't tell if it's reground or not. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Bill

There is another problem with double lock tappets, besides the small base, which is quite bad in itself. It is very hard to adjust them. I bought a set and installed them in an engine I was building up. I had to take the valve springs off and push up the tappets to adjust them. It was very hard to get them adjusted right. I decided to remove the double lock tappets and buy single lock tappets. They were a little more expensive, but adjusted much, much easier. Beside the base is wider. STAY AWAY FROM DOUBLE LOCK TAPPETS.

I've had a problem with the single lock lifters in two different engines. I had to use them for their larger bases with new Stipe 340 cams. The singles rely on thread friction to hold their setting. They do not actually 'lock' at all, unlike the doubles which have a jamb nut to actually lock the setting. Three worked farther in, opening clearance. One worked itself further out, reducing clearance to zero, burning an exhaust valve.

In the late 80,s I installed a set of "A" double lock lifters in my 33 "B" engine.About 7 yrs ago,I put the engine in my 30 cpe & have put around 14,000 miles on it since & have not had to reset the valves.
