Getting ready to paint a December 30 Deluxe Coupe 45-B. Was going to use Lombard Blue/Black/Hessian Blue which is shown as an option in the JS on the MAFCA web site and paint and finish guide. However, according to the JS 2011 revision, this combination is not an option for 1930 but is for a standard coupe in 1931. Which set of documents is correct?

The 2011 version of the Restoration Guidelines & Judging Standards represents the best documented understanding of how these cars were produced when new. It is not flawless, but in the area that you ask about (paint) it is correct. The next edition (expected to be available late-Spring or early-Summer 2016) will be even better.

A few comments...

1. There should be no difference in this area between the Paint & Finish Guide (3rd Ed.) and the Restoration Guidelines & Judging Standards (2011 ed.). I did a quick scan and they looked the same to me. If you are looking at an older version of the P&F Guide, there may be differences.

2. The color scheme you seek was offered starting in September, 1930, on a Std. Coupe but not on a Dlx. Coupe, and not offered on a Dlx. Coupe in 1931 either. Tom's comment about December almost being 1931 does not really help, because this color scheme was not on a Dlx. in '31 either.

3. Unless you intend to enter fine point judging with it, it's your car, paint it how you want to paint it. Few people will ever know that you put a '30 Std. Coupe color scheme on a Dlx. Coupe. Among those few that actually know this, half won't say anything anyway. You can honestly tell people that this is an authentic color combination for a '30 Coupe and let it go at that.

IF you are going to have the car judged in competition you should only refer to the 2011 revisions. HOWEVER if you are not planning on judging...Its your car, do as you please and enjoy every minute of it!!
