AA Transmission Shaft SB Change

When the 4 speed AA transmission was changed in the SB's was the output shaft also larger? I am asking this due to the fact that some U-joints and parts I recently sold were too big for their application, but they were removed from AA 4 speeds. I know the U-joints carried a later part #, but fit the AA shafts they were removed from very snugly. Thanks Rod

There are two types of output from the AA 4 speed . The first had a pressed steel rear bearing retainer and a muff coupling jackshaft. The coupling had the male end on the output in the form of a "gear" the jackshaft had an integral female end which engulphed the male end. This allowed the system to run with a little misalignment such as when the truck was on a rough road or heavy load .The other end at the chassis cross member had a regular U/J. A small pressed steel cover went over the muff coupling which connected to the tube which covered the shaft The later setup had a large U/J and a forged steel bearing retainer it bolted onto the same sized output shaft the muff coupling gear did . This later U/J was very large and was made in two halves bolted together so the transmission can be removed without pulling the rear end. The early cover will not fit over the late big U/J also the pressed steel bearing retainer cannot be used either. The jackshaft in the late setup is a steel shaft with splines each end.
