A400 along roadside

I found this older guy and his wife broke down along the road here in Port Townsend with an A400. The exhaust pipe had fallen off. We got that back on and I had him start it to check for leaks. The engine was running so fast that he had to run it retarded all the time. I asked him if it was running hot and he told me you could cook dinner on the head. It was a problem with the carb linkage. The rod from the foot feed and carb was 3/8ths too long. I bent the rod to slow it down. I guess the correct way was to bend the foot feed linkage and not the rod, but I got him down the road with the spark control advanced. Am I thinking right about bending the foot feed control?

What you did was the easiest and I see it done that way all the time.

I guess I would have bent the forged arm on the crosshaft. You can bend it easily cold by just using a pliers or wrench.

"400A" on the side of the road. Call the hook and tow it to Joop , and drive the old couple home. Better off with a fordor sedan.
