a wont go

Hi my a starts fine idels good . But as your driving along and give it gas it will sputter back fire and will stall out. Cleaned carb.found some dirt.put back on.same problem ?has been sitting all winter.ran fine when parked.have any ideas. Thanks randy

My guess is you have some 10% ethanol crap gas that has gone bad. My car doesn't run well on warm days with crap gas, so I pay extra for straight gas and that fixed the poor running.

Have you checked fuel flow to carb?

I really doubt that it could be the coil. Coils rarely go bad and usually never from just setting over winter. But you did bring up a good point. Do the easiest checks first, and checking the spark is the easiest check. Just hold the end of the coil wire about 3/8" from a head nut and see if you get a strong blue spark. If you don't try cleaning the points contacts first and if that doesn't help then try a new condenser.

Tom's suggestions are good. I had a similar problem two weeks ago. I unhooked the gas line at the carb. The stream of gas from the fuel line seemed weak, but I was not sure. I examined the fuel line and sediment bowl for clogs and worked my way back to the tank shut off valve. When I removed it I found that the standpipe filter that had been added some time before was cloged. I removed it and put things back together. I then had a very strong flow at the carb end of the fule line. After I reconnected the line to the carb. the car ran fine. The clog was probably caused by crappy gas as Tom suggested. Good Luck.

I would go with a lean mixture caused by a plugged fuel filter or line. I have had problems with rust from the tanks plugging the fuel line. I installed the stand pipe in the gas shut off valve and a see through filter between the gas shut off valve and the stock sediment bowl on the fire wall. This keeps the little filter in the carburetor clean. The see through filter will get pretty dirty in a month.

I hope to get the car out tomorrow. I bought a power house generator this winter and hope to install it tomorrow.

I would drain the gas tank and put in fresh gas. My sedan did this a couple years ago and I replaced dang near everything to no avail before I changed out the gas. Problem solved. I now put MMO and Stabil in every fall when I put the cars away for the winter. They still sputter a little, but they seem to even out pretty well. Somebody suggested completely draining all gas out if the car will sit for more than a month, because the ethanol will attract moisture and rust the tank. That will be my drill next fall.

I thought heat and other gas additives that prevented gas lines from freezing and absorbed moisture was ethanol.

I have heard that keeping the tank full will prevent the tank from rusting which makes sense to me. I bought some new sheet metal parts that were not painted or primed. They rusted over the winter.
