A vote for a Digital Judging Standards

25 pages views per day. It actually probably wasn't 25 people per day. It was more than likely 1 person visiting 25 pages, or 5 people visiting 5 pages each or ????
If you do decide to go digital and publish anything, beware of using Ford part numbers. If you remember Bratton's got a letter from ford and had to renumber his entire inventory or pony up...fwiw,hjm

Have not heard of this misadventure!!! Have been curious as to why he is the only one that does not use the Ford number series.

Vince (Ford Garage), based on your cartoon I am the Idea Rat. If I could type I would be more than that, I would be a Get It Done Rat.

A few replies back I asked if the JS was a digital document. If so I would be more than willing to use my skills (though limited) to make this idea become a reality. Of course that is if I had permission from the two clubs and the JS committee to do so.

Pluck, I don't know how to start a "poll" on this site. I looked for a template. If you or anyone else would help set this up I would appreciate it.

The basic question is:

Would you as a MARC and/or MAFCA member be in favor of creating an on line, digital Judging Standards that has hot links to photos that would help illustrate the various concepts presented?

Thanks.
Dean

Howdy Vince,

Actually that cartoon is a lot like me. I have tons of ideas but can only do a few.

I brought the idea up originally on Fordbarn inresponse to another thread. But it has been on my mind for some time. Starting this thread was to get people thinking about it and to conjour up other ideas and points of view.

You are so right. For it to have legs it must be brought up to the boards of MAFCA and MARC. I will try to get something together.

Vince, you and everyone are invited to jump in this and other debates. By attaching myself to the cartoon was more an act of making fun at myself than taking anything personal.

Overall I think that there is a consensus to get it digitized and on line. It sure would help our hobby.

Dean,

I can not find how to set up a poll either...did it once but the info seems to be gone. I wonder if Ryan deleted it?

I can set up a survey on my web site. What choices ?

How about:

Judging Standards
1) Online
2) CD or DVD
Funding
1) None
2) One time pay
3) Sell ad space
Protection
1) None
2) Passwords

OR maybe this way
Just one question
Judging standards
1) Free
2) Online one time pay
3) Online sell ad space
4) CD/DVD one time pay
5) CD/DVD Sell ad space

OR another way ????

I prefer a hard copy of the standards (JS). In fact I bought 2 copies. The only problems I have had has been the speed of updating the JS. Examples are: Changes for judging are made and reported in the News only like changing the wording to allow aluminum fans. Changes that should be made to the JS due to research that will be included in future JS revisionsand reported in the News only. I think any changes or corrections that are to be made should be available online immediately once approved. They should be free to view download or print. When the formal revisions are published hard copy then a fee could be charged for the revised pages to your standards. As far as digital files go any photographic reference material available online would be really helpful.

Digital Judging Standards is the ideal tool to document and capture the wealth of knowledge that we are losing as many of our mentors pass on.

If we move fast our information technology will provide the perfect opportunity to identify the mass of information on paper, drawings, in photos, in museums and in the knowledge of individuals who will soon be lost to us.

Computers, colored digital photos and scans can capture the mass of data that is in many situation is in the experiences of senior model A owners. We have many web sites that have captured pieces of our hobby or business that put together with the current judging standards.

Identifying the correct shape, materials, and finish can over time be pulled together by our experts based on all the viable data available and high resolution digital color photos.

There are technical protections and copyright laws available to protect the valuable work as well.

Now is the time to move forward and send requests to the national and local clubs to work together to document and preserve the Model A heritage.

Vince,

I understand your "Sending a message to the National Clubs that 'they' should take up the cause reminds me of the Pogo cartoon." To do so would be a bit presumptuous.

Your two examples are right on. Now, it seems to me that when someone comes up with an idea the first thing to do is to find out if others agree with that idea. Another thing to do is to get input. Find out what are some other ways to achieve the same end. Once that research is done the idea can be formulated and implimented or in this case suggested to MARC and MAFCA.

This thread seems to indicate that there is interest. Bob Johnson is now finding out which ways folks would prefer to achieve and eventually receive a digital JS.

Now all I have to do is find Bob's site. What is the URL of his site? Does anyone know?

Thanks.

My observation is that the way stuff gets done in this hobby is that the Idea Rat usually has to lead the charge themselves and do it, or convince and prevail on a capable Leader Rat to form a volunteer militia and lead the charge.

The problem in my opinion is this:

Knowledge is power. Those that already have the knowledge do not always wish to share. In this case, the "idea rat" thinks this is a good idea because he does not have the knowledge, i.e. personal knowledge of all of the original parts or great photo examples of what all of the different original parts look like and how they differ from reproduction parts.

The committees that have the knowledge and possibly photos have very little incentive to create a user friendly database to spread the knowledge that they already possess, to the masses. That is the essential problem. The masses wish to learn. Accessible photos may be a good way to spread the knowledge, but do those that have the photos want to share? Those that want the information can't very easily create this database because they don't have the data.

As has already been pointed out, one Fordbarn member has already started his "retirement project" of creating an online photo database of these parts. The problem is he has a nice format set up, but he has almost no data on the site. Nobody who has the data has stepped up to share it on that site.

I would love to be able to help as I think this is a good idea. My problem is I was born in 1960. All of the Model A's that I have owned over the years had been restored or deteriorated by the time I ever saw them for the first time, I have never personally seen an original unrestored Model A in good condition. I continue to research and study to learn what I can, but I can't change when I was born.

By Committees, I am referring to the JSC's. The members of those committees are the ones who are in the best position to provide the data for such a database, but my point is that they already have the information or know the information and as such do not appear to see the need for such a digital database. That is the problem with this venture.

If the Fordbarn member who set up a website to provide this service had input from the members of the JSC, this project might have been completed already.

I am speaking for myself and in no way represent anyone else.
If you knew what you were talking about, I'd be more apt to listen. The diffence between the JSC members and you, or any one else, is that they stepped up and dedicated considerable time, money and effort to be on the JSC. To a person on the JSC's that I am acquainted with, none withhold information. One member blew considerable personal cash in the purchase of some 200? shocks to get photo evidence of the changes. Another spent a small fortune (own money) on ebay for more un-needed parts for photos. I spent considerable cash (in the form of vacation not spent on vacation) to attend meetings. BTW, the meetings were held in an office located on the tarmack of an airport, and lasted 8 plus hours. Not exactly a vacation. THEY IS YOU. THEY is us. I put up a web site at my own expense, to share the knowledge. All I got 'you should do more' 'you don't know what you are talking about' 'you should spend all your free time giving me what I'm not willing to learn for myself' 'you should spend more on literature so i don't have to' 'you should take more photos of parts you don't have so i don't have to buy them and take them myself'. There is no hoarding of information by the JSC. I don't owe you anything. The JSC doesn't owe you more than what they are will to voluntarily give. Also the 'club' is also volunteers. The only full time people in the 'club' are probably 4 secretaries between the two clubs. When anyone says ' the club' should do this or that', they should look in the mirror. YOU are the club, there is no THEY...fwiw, jim mason ex JSC member, ex website owner, ex 'they'

Jim,

Please re-read the entire discussion. I never said that "the clubs" or "the committees" or "they" need to create this database. I simply said that it will be difficult.

My reference to the JSC's was as follows:

"The committees that have the knowledge and possibly photos have very little incentive to create a user friendly database to spread the knowledge that they already possess, to the masses. That is the essential problem. The masses wish to learn. Accessible photos may be a good way to spread the knowledge, but do those that have the photos want to share? For about two years, one member of Fordbarn has had a website set up for this purpose. In that time, nobody has assisted in getting this project done by submitting documentation for that site.

This is a major educational project. It will take a lot of work from a lot of people to do it. It will need to be a priority of an organized entity to pull it off. I think it is a good idea, but there are a lot of good ideas that don't get implemented.

Your comments seem to echo my belief that there is little incentive for those who have this data to assemble it in any type of digital or online format. I don't know how to create the necessary incentive to spur this idea along to successful implementation.

Just who is/was the modorator of the site?

I kind of forgot about it.
