A trip down memory lane

I went to a friend's house today for a vist and took the Ford.
As we were out in the driveway a lady came out from next door
And asked if the older 97 year old gentleman she was sitting for could come
See the car. *Of course! *I have never seen a 97 year old move as fast as he did with a walker. His face lit up with excitement. He was telling me how he hadn't seen one since he was a kid. His family had a T then upgraded to an A. *I asked him if he wanted to go for a ride. You should have seen him race to the other side and climb on in. I had to make sure he didn't fall but he wanted to do it all himself. *We went cruisin' around the neigborhood and he was telling me stories of when he was a kid and how they used these cars. "We had to stay in the ruts and wouldn't go any faster than 25-30. No paved roads back then, son." Yes sir, does she remind you of yours? "Just like it! Boy this brings back some memories."
I am not sure who had the bigger kick out of this, him or I.
I believe items like these old cars are meant to bring enjoyment to those of us that own them and others who get to experience them. I am sure this old man probably only has a few more years left but at least he got to feel like a kid one more time.:)

Man, that's just great. So many of our older folks have so little to do but reminisce. Thanks to you that old gentleman got to reach out and live a memory. I thank you sir. Rusty

Thanks for doing that, and thanks for your time to post it to us! These kind of things we'll never forget.

Perfdavid, you have inspired me. I have a work associate who has a neighbor in his 90's and he has wanted me to bring my A over and give him a ride one day. This weekend for sure.

Yep, i need to start asking dad about his adventures with uncle Eddie. Granted dad is not 90, but he did a lot of things in the mid 60's as a teenager with A's that can no longer be done as that world is long gone.

To me, things like this are half the fun of owning and driving a Model A. I drive mine almost daily, and often find folks looking and talking about it when I come back to the car after leaving it outside some place of business.

Every Sunday afternoon, my wife and I drive into old uptown Sedona and have some ice cream while we sit on a bench and watch people look at the car. If I see an older person leaning in to look at the interior or trying to see through the hood louvers, I'll go over and talk to them about it. Lots of folks pose for photos with the car. If I see a young person that really seems interested, I always offer to let them sit in the car and pretend they're driving. You never know who might get interested in buying a Model A some day.

We attended a local fair with our Tudor. Lots o families were there, and the youngsters were dying to sit in it. We had a marvelous time with them - and they and their parents went away with big smiles on their faces. I can't think of a better way to suck in (er, attract) the next generation. :)

This is why I have A`s. I never turn down our elders for rides. Take your A to church and see how many people you can make Happy. I also like to go to nursing homes . You will make the best of friends. Thanks for a wonderfull post.....Dave

Our club, The Hangtown A's, in Placerville, California meets at the local retirement home. A few of the residents are club members.

Our chapter also visits retirement homes.

This is Andy. Andy is in his 90's.

Andy insisted in riding in the rumble seat. Then Andy insisted riding with my wife.

He had a huge smile on his face. I'm keeping a close eye on Andy.

Our Club, River Cities A's visits three or four retirement homes every year. It is both gratifying to see all those smiles, and amazing what you will learn. One "bouncy" lady insisted in getting into the rumble seat and when seated, she gave a broad smile and said " You would be surprised what I did in one of these, more than a few times." Thanks for a great story, and yes this is what our hobby is all about. Jim Langley...
