A short someplace--part two

A while back I asked for help because the car would not start, and when I had the lights on and pushed on the brake the lights almost went out. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I changed starters, switches, rocked the car while in high gear and re-charged the battery. Nothing changed. I put the original items back on the car. It started right up and no lights dimmed.
All seems well and good, but I still don't know why it quit in the first place.
Thanks again for your help.

It sounds like the original problem was the brake switch or brake light shorting to ground. Some repro brake switches have been known to have one terminal short to ground.

Best to always check a brake switch for shorts. Use an ohm meter or continuity tester and put one lead on a terminal and the other lead on the body. Pull the switch on and off and it should never have continuity. Move to the other terminal and repeat the check.

If stoplight switch becomes TOO problematic, the old Chev. type stoplight switch, listed in Mac's catalog on page 140, PART # 13480-UNIV, $9.50 (CHEEP!) & is just screwed to the bottom of your floorboard, by the brake pedal, is a good alternative!
