A little help needed with door latch spring

Can anyone save me a few hours of head scratching and tell me where this loose spring came from? This is from the driver's door latch from a '33 Ford. I believe it has something to do with the handle position between opening and locking, but can't just quite figure it out. Thanks in advance for any help! Bill

To me, it looks like it could be a "left-over" broken tail from the original coil spring which the pictured coil spring replaced. DD

It looks like the spring that acts as a detent for the inner door handle. The picture is of a '32.

It is the door handle spring as BillM suggested above. The spring is broken you can see in Bills photo how it is supposed to be installed. The bracket holding the square handle drive in place, usually has to be loosened up to install the spring. The spring is sold by many of the parts suppliers. It holds the handle in the lock as well as the neutral position.

Thanks for the help. The composite picture Don shows is exactly what I have. My handle is right in the latch, not a remote handle, although the springs may be exactly the same. I'll get a new spring ordered up.
