A Good Transmission Story

I have heard that later model synchro gear sets ('39-48??) can be installed in a Model A box. Is this true? Be gentle, it's my first Model A!

There are adaptors to install a '32-'39 V-8 transmission in a Model A.

These kits have been available for many years.

It used to be a popular conversion but now the problem is finding good transmissions.

The easiest way is to install a Mitchell.

Absolutely no modifications and they work well.

Like the early V-8 transmission the Mitchell is synchronized only in second and high, not first.

A friend was in the business of restoring Model As. His transmission "improvement" consisted of Model B components which as I remember included "helical" gears of similar size and kind to the Model A equivalents.

Gears for the later 3 speed automobiles were not reproduced at that time (are they now?) so he encouraged me in my travels to "pick up what you can find of these later trannys - and I'll buy them from you." Alas I never found much. They were either working and in service, or already headed for a WWII scrap drive long ago.

I'm not sure these "mid-range" transmission included a sycro per-se. I think shifting was improved by virtue of the helical gears?
