94 vs 97

I have a dilemma installed new stromberg when we first rebuilt the engine. Was told the 94 is correct for truck, got it rebuilt and it and runs like poop. Put stromberg back on runs great. Carb rebuilder says there's issues with engine. Is it possible a rebuilt carb would make issues arise. I don't think so.

Sounds like the carb rebuilder is the one with the issues.
There are a number of older carb kits available that no longer work well due to the new formulation of gas, and newer kits that don't work with the older carbs.
Your rebuilder may have unknowingly used one of these garbage kits.
A 94 is simple enough to build and set up, you may decide to remove it and do it yourself.
Check right here on this Forum for several good carb builders to supply you with a good kit.

47 flatbed,

I've got a Stromberg 97 (original, not a new one) on my 47 COE and a Ford 94 on my 39 sedan. I rebuilt both myself but had to send off the 94 for professional work as the carb body was warped and the throttle shaft holes were worn too much. Surprisingly, the Stromberg doesn't leak a drop which is antithetical to conventional wisdom of the 97 being a leaky carb...but a sample size of 1 does not make for a valid test.

Both work well and I'd say the performance is identical to the casual observer - me. Ron Ceridono from Street Rodder magazine did a tech comparison that can be found here:

http://www.streetrodderweb.com/tech/1104sr_stromberg_97_and_the_holley_94/viewall.html

His conclusion - no significant difference in performance.

So, with all other things equal, your engine shouldn't run dramatically different between the two carbs...unless, something is wrong. I'd suspect the carb first as that is the only item you indicated that you changed.

If you serious about the correct carb vice using the Stromberg, I'd look up one of the recommended carb rebuilders on Ford barn for help. Otherwise, keep the Stromberg.

One or two carbs? What power valve and jet sizes? Are the throttle shafts worn? With two carbs I run a 2.5 power valve in both carbs and # 48 jets (depends on cam etc.) Once carb 6.5 power valve and 48 to 50 jets. I have used both but prefer the 94s jets and power valves are readily available as they are Holley parts 97's are specialized parts.

Thanks guys. My truck is a simple build. 2 years on engine rebuild mild 3/4 webber cam 30 over bore ford crank. So simple driver. Bought new stromberg because summit racing down the street had one and I wanted to drive my truck. I guess I'm kinda impatient. But of there isn't much difference in power I leave we'll enough alone.
