'94 F-150 351 W engine

I found a small spot of coolant on driveway, Inspected, & saw a bit of evidence of a small seep but could not locate. Coolant level at that time was normal. I went to get gas & while there, coolant started flowing from under truck. Service adviser diagnosed it as timing cover gasket bad & leaking. Does the 351 w engine have coolant flowing thru/in the timing cover?

The water pump bolts to te timing cover and pushes water through outlets into the block on both sides. There are gasket between the WP and timing cover, and the timing cover and the block. Some of the bolts that secure the WP and timing cover go into the water passages in the block. The leak could be one of the gaskets, or around a bolt thread. Because it could save a lot of work, before you disassemble the entire front of the motor, try removing some of these attaching bolts and reseal with RTV. Of course, to do this you must first drain the coolant. Good luck.

I've seen these covers rot out over time and leak. I would pressure test it first before I tore it own to see where it's coming from.

Thanks Motorhead6, Darrell & Lowrider. You confirmed what i needed to know. I had the timing cover off of a 352/360 Fe (different series I know) once & didn.t effect cooling system so I was skeptical of diagnosis. I am well into senior citizen age & no longer do much except light jobs. Miss being able to do the work that used to be easy.

I've had to replace those gaskets twice in my 5.0. The engine only has about 85,000 on it. There isn't much width the the gaskets around the water passages.

Thanks for info. I bought truck new. has 69+++ actual miles on it.

Has anyone installed a cam advance kit to advance 2 maybe 4 deg? If so what was the results? Did it increase torque? MPG (if driven moderately conservatively)? Did it cause any problems? I did that on a '71 360 F-250 and it increased my hiway from 12 to 14 MPG & I could squeal the tires afterward. It still would pass emition test.

I had an 87 f250 4x4 with a 460 don't know if its the same I had the freeze out plugs replaced 2 x behind the cover truck had less than 50,000 on it
