8CM(merc) vs 8BA(ford)..differences Q

What differences, if any, between these two 1949 engines? Is one desirable over the other?

The Mercury has a 4" stroke crank, making it 255cid, as compared to the Ford's 239cid from its 3.75" crank. The Mercury's 8CM heads are a bit low on compression, and it has what some call a back draft carb which utilizes a 4 bolt base. Basic blocks are the same. As far as desirable, many would rather have the 4" crank and extra cubes.

Thanks guys. Hey Mike...yeah, I just got my 'hands' on this 8CM and gonna try it. But, I'll keep you in mind when I can not handle it(grin)! Rick
