8BA Oil Filter Options

I am about to install my 49 8BA back into my Merc...and I was wondering what are my oil filter options on a stock block (non full flow).
Can I run a spin on remote oil filter with the stock flathead and oil pump?
Or am I limited to NO oil filter......and/or the original beehive bypass?
Thanks for the advice.

Have A full flow system with a melling 19 on my 8BA. If you had a filter you can adapt the line to a spin on adapter and use a spin on. I have mine in the stock location. The melling 19 is more than adaquate to push oil thru the system. I think pressure is a function of the pump, not a full flow system.:D

I opted to use the original bypass filter system ( they worked well for many years )
The only difference is that after reading the benefits of a 2-3 micron filter I installed an
Amsoil spin on bypass filter setup.
In as much as the Amsoil filter uses a restictor hole that is .010" smaller than the Ford, I
noticed an 8-10 p.s.i. increase in the oil pressure across the board ( that was a surprise )

I have a lot of respect for the by pass oil filter, It's a effective system- finer filtration... I run a full flow, I did the change while building the engine.

Looks interesting, can you give me the info to acquire a setup like that.

Hastings LF117 and wix 51050 baldwin B50 are all spin on bypass depth filtration and not surface filtration,Also has a flow re stricter plate to give same results as orifice in oem canister line.Needs an adapter plate with 5/8 18 thread easy to accomplish.Baldwin# OB1305 base.Used on farm equipment and hd applications & some forklifts.Very common. Can be used instead of messy cartridge in oem canister if desired plumbing is the same.

The only parts of my setup that are available off the shelf are the EaBP-90 filter and the BK-303 filter mount. The rest of the setup ( filter mount holder, tube and fitting assy's etc. ) are all self fabricated. The filter and filter mount are available from Amsoil.

The filters used on these applications are not the same as normal spin on applications. They have an orifice in them to operate the same as the bypass canister filter used by ford. Not to be confused with the spin you all are aware of.These have a 5/8" thread to prevent them being used on a normal spin on application as those aren't 5/8" thread.Common spin on threads are 3/4" 13/16" metric and many more for the normal spin on.The orifice can be seen in the pictures.Hope this clears up some confusion about filters. They are classed as bypass and not surface filtration.

I found the only way to get this done on my 48 f1 was to get rid of the mechanical fuel pump and buy the block off for the top of the manifold which has a machined 1/8" npt hole in the center and i am going to use this as my oil return location. Then i obviously had to change to an electric fuel pump, which k&n has a self regulator built inside so no extra plumbing is needed. Still finishing up the project but according to the few guys ive ran this past it should wor out well. My spin on assmebly is mounted to the frame rail.

Why couldn't you use the stock return hole in the side of the block? You'd have to plug it if you don't use it.

Ross i guess i am confused then. I had a previous post called What Are The Odds, and by the time that post was finished i assumed i had to return the oil into the engine where my fuel pump previously was mounted. I must be totally confused with the difference of a by pass and a full flow system. I bought my remote oil adaptor from speedway.

The original by-pass systems had the oil returns to numerous locations: a fuel pump stand bolt, a timing gear cover bolt and the oil pan area. The bolt returns were used because this were add-on systems that the engine was not designed for. There can be problems with the addition of oil to the valley area, but doesn't seem to be a large problem in practice. The most obvious return would be to the oil pan area.

My 52 Merc has the return to the oil pan. The 39 Deluxe with a Kralinator add on filter has the return to the fuel pump stand base via a banjo fitting bolt. Which I found was surprisingly easy to over-tighten and twist off. :-( Otherwise it has been a good system.

What is the part number of the filter that you plan on using on your speedway setup?Did your engine have a bypass filter on it before you installed the new one?

Anyone that does an engine rebuild should take the time to drill it for a full flow oil system. That stock system doesn't filter all of the oil and depending on back pressure may not filter very much at all.........

I would like to hear knowledgeable comments on not using a filter, but changing oil a little more often?
