8ba leaky heater shutoff valve

at this point i am not running a heater so i currently have the valve closed and a section of heater hose connected to the passenger water pump to cap the pump output.the valve leaks at the shaft while running. i have a couple options. #1 i can get a plug for the head and a 5/8" cap to cap off the pump (do they make those?) #2 find a new valve and keep it they way it is minus the leaks. i hope to run a heater but it wont be for a few years.
does anyone know the thread pitch and size? (i assume it is pipe thread?) or does anyone know of a quality replacement valve? bonus points for if i can find one local maybe napa? anyone had any luck?
 
I'd guess the worst of it will be getting the old one out. They really get stuck in there. Have you tried replacing the packing, or even just tightening it up?
