I am ready to drop the 8ba in my 40, sizing thinks up I am concerned about the ty rod and steering linkage clearence at the oil pan. I plan on using the truck pan with the large clean out disk, but visually it does not look like it going to fit. Who has done this and what pan should I use?

You are probably on the right track. The rear sump pans for the 8BA, 8RT, & 8CM would be the better choice for cross steering as originally installed. Some one out there is bound to have done it before.

I installed a 8rt in my 46 coupe and had to remove the truck pan as the tie rod hit the pan. I used a 49 mercpan. You'll need the merc specific sump too if swapping for this pan. Also the merc pans have a windage tray built in as well.

I put a 8RT in A 42 Coupe, with Truck pan no problem.

I had a dropped axle and lowered the steeringsarm's accordingly.

Run a search for 8ba in a 40...I put a 8ba in a 40 pickup and ran across all kinds of problems...still am as a matter of fact. Check my posts for those questions and answers....

I put an 8BA in my 40 (avatar) and used the 49-51 Merc stamped steel bell housing and starter plate and a 49-51 Merc rear sump oil pan. I am 99.9% the rear sump truck oil pan will also work. I also used the Ford 8RT truck wide pump water pumps. I believe the stock 51 merc water pumps will also work. I did not have any problems with the stock 40 shift linkage. It clears the engine and heads. The stock tie rods and drag link also clear everything. Where you run into the most difficulty is trying to use the 8BA fan bracket pulley and fan. It cannot be adjusted low enough so the fan blades hit the upper water hoses. I know some folks mount a 40 Ford fan on the 8BA crank pulley to avoid problems. Also the water inlets on the 8BA heads are not the same size as the stock 40 radiator. The stock 40 exhaust manifolds bolt right up to the 8BA.
