8ba in a '34

Morning Barners..I am installing a 8ba flathead into my '34 Ford, stock frame and body, but have a clearance issue with the crank pulley hitting the front crossmember and spring "U" bolts.. I cannot move the engine any further back without the right side cylinder head hitting the firewall. I know this swap has been done before but what is the solution?? I was thinking about using early water pumps, and machining the crank pullley to move it rearward the needed amount.. Could this be done??..Any help would be appreciated...Thanx...

Use truck water pumps and then buy the spacers sold by Speedway Motors to raise the motor up.

you will need the truck pumps and maybe to raise the motor up (a little?) but the fix will probably be a little slice and dice of the rear portion of your crossmember to allow the crank pulley to clear...AND to allow you to slip a belt over the pulley,,,,,,,(don't ask me how I found that out!) Good luck,Dave

Truck pumps is a must, and then the C clips to raise it. the clips was a kit you could buy from Ford to retrofit "modern" engines in a 32-34
Part nbr 41a-6023

This is my version.

Will this be the same for a 34 1 ton, I'll be working on a a school bus a little later and some yak put a chevy in it, thats got to go, and my understanding is that the early V-8's were somewhat of a problem child, so I am thinking of a little later one, this doesn't have to be period correct just better than it is.

If the 1 Ton dont have any special motormount's i say it will be the same procedure.
Otherwise the "modern" engine will lean forward.

Just about any of the early V8's will accept the later 8BA, 49-53 style of engine if you use Ford truck or '49-50 Merc waterpumps. You will also need the '49-50 Merc motor mount spacers and a Ford '49-50 Merc bellhousing in lieu of a Ford bellhousing.
The pix I have attached is of a 8BA engine in a '37 Ford pickup. The water pumps shown in the pix are '49-50 Merc.

When I put the 8BA in my 40 Ford I used the early Ford pick up 8RT truck wide belt pumps and crank pulley and the stock 40 Ford rubber bushings and motor mount bolts because I wanted to keep the wide belt system including the wide belt on the gen. puley. The 51 Merc pumps would work have worked also except they are narrow belt and would have meant changing all pulleys to narrow belt. I believe the 49 and 50 Merc pumps are also wide belt. The last two photos are with the 8RT pumps and the stock rubber motor mount bushing and bolt without a spacer. The lower crank pulley is the same dia. as the stock pulley and does clears the cross member. Keep in mind as you raise the front of the engine, the fan blade moves up closer to the top rad. hoses. That can be a problem. I think 35-40 frames are about the same, but 34 may be different.

Thankyou, I need to look at the bus, it may not have a truck fire wall, it may be incorperated with the body, and could have a little more room.
