8ba in a 1940 Pickup Problem

While I have the 8ba engine mounted in the frame, the stock exhaust manifold on the driver side drops down right at the steering box. Are there any aftermarket exhaust systems out there? Has anyone come across this issue? Any other issues that I will come across in the future. Thanks for all responses. Cheers

i just put an 8BA in a 41 coupe should be running this weekend i hope, the engine is out of a 1950 pickup,my left exhaust exits more foward like between the crossmember and the box plenty of room,i have a 46-48 59AB that i just removed from the coupe and the exhaust also exits foward of the box same as the 8BA ,so a L/s exhaust from a 46-48 59ab will work. the next problem will be the fan,in both our cases...al

Bob Drake has just re-popped the '49to'51 police left side exhaust manifold that locates the exhaust outlet a few inches further to the rear and clear of the steering box!

I believe that what he has is not a standard left 8BA manifold...I think it is another custom piece for a dual exhaust, similar to the one that is reproduced but angled slightly differently.
Neither looks very promising for the '40.
A stocker might fit, but would require a fairly sudden curve backward to get out into the available space.

Stock '40 manifolds will work. I am using Red's extension pipes for stock manifolds on my pickup. If you don't have stock '40 manifolds you may be better off getting Headers and header extensions from Red's.

I just today looked at a friends 1939 coup with an 8ba. He raised the radiator mounts from the bottom of the frame to the top of the frame member and used the stock radiator. It clears the hood and radiator hoses.

thanks everyone...I will look into it. What do you see as being a problem with the fan oldskool?

the problem will be the stock 8BA fan setup, its mounted very hi up and the fan blades will hit the upper rad hoses,,there are several ways around this ,use an electric fan, raise rad as one members friend did,use a small fan blade with shorter belts,or adapt the original 40-41 fan to the crank pulley as im thinking of doing but im still open to aditional ideas:),,,good luck al

When I installed an 8BA in my 40 Ford coupe the stock left hand side 1940 Ford exhaust manifold worked and cleared the stock steering box. I also used the stock 1940 RH exhaust manifold. About 10 years ago I changed to Fenton cast iron headers. If you decide to use an OFFY 4 bbl. intake BE CAREFUL as the OFFY generator mount is cast 7/8 in offset to the right when viewed from the front of the car. This creates massive problems as the crank pulley, fan pulley and gen pulleys won't line up.

19forty is the offy the only 4 barrel manifold with this offset set issue? what about edelbrock, sharp ect ect,i plan on useing a 4 bbl set up and don't need any more problems...al

The stock 1940 crank pulley will place the fan too far from the radiator to get good cooling. You will have to have a spacer made to move the fan closer to the radiator.

Any stock 1940-1948 left side exhaust manifold will work to clear the steering box. The outlet is near the front of the engine.

Although I don't like it much, I run an electric puller fan on the inside face of the radiator - been there 6 years adn it runs constantly.

That sure doesn't look like the exhaust manifold on the 8BA in my 37 ford pickup. The outlet on mine is up front and clears the steering column. I can send a pic if you would like. jdurnil

The manifold you show, as pointed out a couple of times, is not a normal 8BA type but a version for dual exhaust conversion in the original chassis.
Options:
Get a pair of '40 manifolds, bolt everything together with either stock pipes or dual conversion pipes.
Actual 8BA manifolds...exit forward, very probably clear everything. Build down pipes from front, block extra outlet on right.
'42-8 manifolds, similar to 1940 but I believe bigger passages.
