8BA Fuel pump return

Here’s an odd question for the experts: rebuilding 49 flathead ford, 8BA. After much searching found new oil pump same length as the old stock short pump (8.75 inches - the newer "long" pumps are 9.75 inches top to bottom). I purchased a new screened return for the pump of which the screen ends up about 2.25 inches above bottom of pan. The old screen return screen is 1.25 inches above the bottom of the pan. Which screened return should I use?
Will 2.25 inches be to high to pick up oil in the pan or will 1.25 inches encounter obstruction from being too close to bottom of the pan?

thx in advance for considering my question.

simple example (a truck pan ) the cover is removed and the screen is right there.'
Don't think you can stick your finger between the screen housing and the pan so its
real close to the bottom of the pan....So what pan are you using car or truck ?

Good advice already given. No more than 1/2 inch, nor less than 1/4 inch, for screen housing to sump clearance.

Ok, re-measured carefully. Bottom of screen 1/2 inch from bottom of pan. My eyeball estimate of 1.25 inches were off. Spacially challenged.

Thanks, this is perfect. The knowledge of all responders is amazing.

It may depend on how you drive the car, but even 1/2 is on the high side (per JWL). If it is not cornered a lot at speed or no fast take-off or stops it should be ok. For hard driving I think would want to get it a little closer.
