8ba distributor housing / timing cover alignment question

guys,

i am putting together a 8ba for my 50 f1. i dropped in the distributor last night and noticed that the housing on the distributor and the timing cover dont meet. the distributor is fully "set" into the block and engaging the cam gear etc. The top of the housing is sitting on the head at the distributor hold down (stock cast 8BA head). should there be a gap here? logic says that the housing should bottom out on the timing cover?

maybe i have a distributor from something else?
 
That gap looks correct for your aluminum distributor and lower supported front cover. The cast iron distributors sit deeper into the covers.
 
Think about for a moment. If you had it bottom out on the cover, you would have a conflict seating properly on the head.
