8ba clutch question.

I have an Av8 roadster with a 51 Merc engine, and a 39 trans. The flywheel is from a 49 Truck, and it has a 10" clutch, and flywheel.

Can I order a 9" clutch and Pressure plate and have it bolt up to this flywheel, or am I limited to the 10" Pressure plate.

Id measure it up, but its together and driving, I just wanna order the parts for a rainy day.

Thanks, Rob

If it uses the Merc pressed steel bellhousing The clutch fork will not align with the Ford pressure plate. Also, the Merc flywheel has 6 evenly spaced pressure plate bolts where-as the Ford clutch has 3 groups of two. I'd just keep the Merc setup in it.

49-51 truck bell housing (8RT type) is cast iron. It will take up to 11" clutch. If the flywheel is the 1949-53 type, AND is already drilled for the 10" Long style pressure plate, you are all set to use the 1942-50's 10" pressure plate and the 10" disc with the 1-3/8" ten spline hub.

The 48/52 truck flywheel that I have (8RT-6375) is an 11 inch Long type but all can be drilled for early 9 or 10 inch by a good machine shop as long as you have the pressure plate in hand that you want to bolt on to it so they can insure an accurate fit.

If you have a light duty pickup truck flywheel with a 10" pressure plate you will not see any gain by going to a 9" pressure plate. You will have to have the flywheel re drilled to match the 9" unit and will not be any advantage except the thrill of spending money. Use the 10" pressure plate, the 10" clutch disc unit and everything will bolt together just fine. The only issue is to make sure that you have retained the starter plate for that bell housing.
