85 HP V-8 dipstick indication

I have just got my restored 1940 tudor sedan deluxe 85 HP V-8 on the road and I'm wondering what the correct dipstick indication should be with an original operating oil filter. After adding 6 quarts to the crankcase (5 + 1 for filter) the dipstick indicates right at the "full" line. I'm wondering if it shouldn't be indicating above the full line after the engine has cooled off. Were there different dipsticks for cars equipped with filters?

Do not add oil for the filter.
It's 5 US quarts total regardless of what others may say. The only proof lays with the engineering drawings which clearly state 5 US quarts. When others chime in here, ask where they got their information from.
There should be a dense wool washer on the dipstick. Also, be certain you have the correct stick for your '40.

From 35-48, the bottom of the stick to the low mark= 23/32, low to full=1 13/32, full to the stop=11 23/32. From the owners manual, fill the oil level to the full mark. You also have to make sure you have the correct oil pan and the tube for the dip stick is the correct length 8 21/64 OAL.

Most FoMoCo filters are drain back types. After the engine is shut down, the oil slowly drains back down only leaving a small amount in the canister.
