I have a 73 Ford F100 pick up and I need to replace the strut arm bushing or rubbers. Is it posiable to remove the cotter pin and 1 1/8" nut and unhook the shock and pull the I beam axle ahead with a come along to get the strut arm out of the frame loop to change the bushings and get them back in to do it? This truck has the twin I beam front axle. Thanks Ron B.

I have a 79, you are talking about the radis arm bushings, I think, was told to take the bracket off, think it has 3 bolts and a rivet, your idea sounds much easer but don't know if you can do it that way, good question!

i would think the spring might have some tension when you unbolt the arm it will want to swing down i'm just going from memory which is getting shorter every day:confused:

Well here is my report on changing the radius arm bushings. I was able to hook a come along to a bolt behind the bumper and to the right side axle. I sued a adjustable ratchet strap to hold the arms together and removed the cotter pin and 1 1/8" nut and unhooked the bottom of the shock and with the come along it pulled forward with ease and I changed the bushings and it went right back in. This was done with it sitting flat on a drive on lift. The left (drivers side) was a different story because it only comes forward about 1 1/2" before it hits the mount for the right I beam axle. You would have to jack up truck and remove wheel and unhook the coil spring to lower axle to pull it forward enough to change bushings. I will do this next week. Ron B.:):)

I grind the rivets down and pop the radius rod brackets off. Some of the later ones (78-79) the brackets are bolted on and not riveted.
