7 tooth Steering Box Rebuild

They are pretty simple and you can do it yourself. The worm gear and sector are replaceable as well as all the bearings. The hardest part is cleaning the parts. There are only two adjustments, the up and down clearance of the steering shaft and the back and forth movement of the sector shaft. Save all the parts that come out including the shims at the bottom and all the washers. Use the seal at the bottom that has the tube and replace the grease fitting at the fill port, if it has one, with a 1/8 pipe plug. The grease fittings confuses people who think that grease should be used.

Yes a very simple steering box to rebuild. Start by collecting several NOS seven tooth sectors as their 'teeth' appear to come in different thicknesses to compensate for a worn worm.

After rebushing the housing & using new bearings, install the shaft & worm. Try different sectors to find one giving the best fit & least play.

Fill the box with Corn Head Grease.

When you get ready to put the springs back in, you can use some marine waxed wipping thread to keep the springs compressed. Make 4 loops equal spaced around the spring, compress in a vice, and tie a surgeon's knot. After the springs are installed, cut the thread and pull it out with some pliers.

The red book, Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook, Vol. I, has instructions, page 1-305.

Where are you located?

Nevermind. I see you have your location in your posting. Too far for me to drive over there. I was thinking I could do it.

Have you tried asking the members of your local club?
