Has anyone here ever successfully built a 6v to 12v converter ? I have seen different place's that sell them and are quite costly. I was messing around with a 120vac to 12vdc power supply and with a few diodes was able to convert the 12vdc to 24vdc with out letting the smoke out.
The reason I ask is because my car is 6v and I would like to put a up to date stereo in it how ever the new stereos are 12vdc. I could all ways put a auxiliary battery in the trunk and run it off that but it would be nice if I could convert it.
Any thoughts ?

You could use a garden tractor battery in the trunk and a solar panel on the back package shelf. ..B.

I have used several small ones from Antique Automobile Radio in Palm Harbor, Fl.
1-800-WE FIX AM or 1-813-785-8733. These work good for GPS or small radios.
cmeyer@pressenter.com makes larger 6 to 12 volt converters. I have used several of his 6 amp units and they work good also. I have had both types for 6 or 8 years. G.M.

Bige386, Keep in mind that if you double the voltage, you will double the amperage. 2 amps at 12 volts will require 4 amps of a 6 volt supply.(you radio will fatten the battery twice as fast, if you follow)

If you just want to run a CD player or ipod etc, it seems like you can do it through your original 6v radio with the equipment they sell on this site.

I think this stuff could solve a lot of problems people have regarding keeping a car original.
