68-B Cabriolet Upper Landau Iron Bracket Screws

What type and size of screws were originally used to fasten the curved legs of the upper landau iron brackets to the rear of the #2 bow? I’ve seen some fastened with machine screws inserted in holes drilled through the bow. I am wondering if wood screws were used originally. If this is correct, what size & length wood screws were used? Many thanks. RLH

I am using wood screws, #12 by 1-1/4". Probably a #14 is the better size, but it is easier to start small and predrill for a larger screw later. A larger screw can be used for final assembly. As I was fitting mine, I clamped the bracket in place and tested the location to make sure the landau bar stayed in its overcentered compressed position with everything else bolted down. My car is a 68A, but would be the same as the 68B. Fitting the upper and lower brackets can be a real task, taking multiple fittings to get right. I noticed my landau compression got less during my shakedown period and the brackets needed to be refitted slightly after a few months of driving. After the car is painted and the body remounted for the final time, I may do more shakedown driving before the top fabric is installed.

As a kid in the sixties, my cabriolet landau irons often dropped when going over rough roads and I ultimately ended up turning the irons 180 degrees (swapping ends) to keep the irons from dropping in the center.

Since you had to experiment with locating the upper brk't, can I assume you were using a replacement #2 bow that was not pre-drilled? Thus, you chose to use wood screws. Thanks. RLH

The upper landau bracket was held in by wood screws.

The bracket would have been placed with a jig and then properly drilled.

The print does not show pre drilled holes.
