66 Mustang

Son-in-law purchased a redone Mustang, 66. Directionals quit. Got to looking and the orange wire going to the flasher has shorted out. Need to know where this wire originates? It has melted the coating all the way back in the harness. Need to run a new wire. Any help here? Thanks Jon. I usually work Model A's, so don't have a manual on these newfangled machines. LOL

This would indicate that you have a problem with the fuse, it should have tripped or melted the link, lucky not to have a fire. The first thing to investigate is the why did she not trip. Unfortunately a lot of guys "restore" a car and leave the electrics completely untouched, depending upon how nice the car is or what your plans or budget will allow I would up date the system completely on this car. While an old model A may not need a wire upgrade and it is preferred not to have one I have always felt that the wiring on a Mustang was never its strong suit in the first place. A lot of the stangs I have owned in the past I have used a remote fuse box and run accessories off of that. I may have a mustang wiring book or you can get one at most of the early stang parts houses, a good investment.

This car was a total restore. Harness is new. Just wondering where this wire starts at. Also where or who are the mustang stores? Thanks Jon

Go to the store and get a magazine on Mustangs. Most of the stores should advertise in them.

Google CJPONY PARTS and MUSTANGS UNLIMITED to get info or catalogs, they are real helpful.

Do the brake light still work? if so that part is good thru switch.
The wire to the flasher i would guess its the orange thats the power wire to flasher.Run a new wire from pos to flasher. If the flasher is still good it may work.If it passes the smoke test your all set.

Got her fixed. Traced the wires and got a wire diagram off the net. The wire ends in a three way plug that reduces down to one wire, which goes to the ignition switch. The wires with the flasher were laying across a metal support. Apparently shorted and melted all the way back to the plug. It left enough that I could butt splice a new wire to the plug. Shrink tape and am good to go. Thanks for the help. Jon
