66 Mustang brakes,

O.K. my Mustang v-8 has the 10X 1 3/4 wide brake shoes. I would like to put on the 2" wide shoes. Is the width controlled by the backing plate or by the offset of the drum? I'm thinking it's the drum, but want to be sure before I buy the parts.

I have a 57 rear in my 54 Ford. When doing some research on other (wider) shoes, I found out the backing plates were different for different width brake shoes. Whether this is the same for the fronts, I do not know.

But the spindles were the same for all the cars as far as I know, so it would stand to reason that the way they put wider shoes on for differnt applications was to have different backing plates.

I believe it is the backing plates. Early Shelby's used Fairlane wagon rear brakes to get 2" shoes on the back.
