63 Fairlane Carb quandry

So long story short we are rebuilding a 63 Fairlane 500. It has a 260 v8 2brl (auto trans and I think its a half year). The carb on it was shot so we ordered a rebuilt one and now this new carb is stuck in the choke position. Previously Ive worked exclusively with Mopar so Im not that familiar with the thermostat choke on Fords. There is a tube running from the thermostat to the passenger valve cover. Is this the thermostat heat crossover? If it is then how is the thermostat not getting enough heat even at operating temp? When running the car we have to stand in front of the carb and open it by hand so the car doesnt kill itself. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

That tube should run from the choke assy. down to the top/rear of the exhaust manifold on the right side. They usually rust out & break off over time giving you the problem your having. You should see a piece of the old tube sticking out of the manifold or at least you should be able to see where it goes. You can drill out the old piece and replace it with a new steel tube. I think some of the auto parts stores may still carry a kit to replace it. Be sure to use the insulation that gose around the tube so it stays hot while running.

While you are working on the carb, see what the number is inside the circle, on pass. side of the carb. Should be 1.01 for a 260. 1.02 would work fine too.

I had a choke tube break off on a Ford 390 once. It broke off at the exhaust manifold. I drilled and tapped the manifold to 1/8 pipe thread, and used a fitting that had 1/8 male pipe threads on one end, and had a compression fitting on the other end. It worked great.
