'61' Galaxie Trans Replacement

My '61' Galaxie has a 292 and a Ford o matic. The engine is fresh but the trans is hurt. I was hoping to swap in a Cruise o Matic for the extra gear. Didn't want to go the adapter route. That being said, does anyone know what year Cruise o Matic I should be looking for? Also the best place to start looking, The Ford Barn of course. I bought this car about ten years ago and I'm just now ready to start the project. This is my first major Ford project and will be asking many questions. She is an all original rust free 2 door, radio delete and Ford air, always been a So. Cal. car and I'm the 2nd owner, sat about nine years before I bought it. Thanks in advance to any and all members that read my post and thanks for your time and any help. I can't wait to get started. The transmission is really the last piece of the puzzle. Doug

Depends on which "Fordomatic" you have, the one piece aluminum Fordo. or the two piece (separate bell housing) Fordo.

If you have the two piece my suggestion would be to mate a FMX to your bell (with some slight mods).

The FMX was in production from '68 to ~'80 and is a good full three speed trans. Shift kits are still available for the FMX.

Good luck on your project.

Y-Blockhead,
What year FMX should I be hunting for? Is any one year better then another? Are they all the same from 68 to 80?
Thank you

I believe they are all the same.

Here's is an article on upgrading a Cruise O to FMX that you may be interested in. http://www.y-blocksforever.com/tech/html/fmx_upgrade.html Written by Bob Martin. I believe he contributes on YBF forums. Another person to contact on YBF is John Feistritzer (had to look that up) also known as the Hoosier Hurricane.

I have a medium case Fordo/FMX sitting on my garage floor that I swapped out for a C-4. Sorry, can't tell you any particulars. It's running an air cooled converter and bell housing but has a water cooled case and vacuum modulator so I think it is a FMX with a Fordo front pump and converter.

One of these days I'm going to have to tear it apart to see what's up…

Good luck with your project.

Sounds like what I will be attempting. Thank you much for your time and info. I hope I'm not turning into a pain in the A55. I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions. This car is going to be so cool. I just picked up a set of FOMOCO '61' stainless factory skirts, now back to the transmission.

if you want an exact replacement you will need a 59 to 62 cruise o from a car with 292.most other years will work like from a 352 but you will need a 292 bell torque and flywheel.

Hi guys I have a similar question regarding a transmision swap. I have a 59 edsel 332 and a . Mile o matic can someone help with a trans that will bolt to my eng with out to many mods?

I'm not too familiar with Edsel engines but if your 332 is a FE any of the transmissions for the Ford FE series engines (i.e. 352, 390, 406, etc.) should be a bolt on swap.
I think a C-6 would be your best choice.
