600W warning

What was the stuff we used to sprinkle on the floors (wood and tile ) at night then swept up in the morning and the floors were nice and clean. I think it was like some kind of treated sawdust.

Called "sweeping compound" and it is a substance designed to "capture" the dust of sweeping before it goes into the air.

It is indeed sawdust, but mixed with a bit of light petroleum oil just enough to cause it to be damp, but not so damp that it is wet.

I see that more environmentally benign products based in water are available too.

Oil Dri / Speedy-Dri are compounds for picking up oil that has soaked into concrete and are based on clay. Frequently the same companies that make Oil dri also make cat litter which is a similar but coarser granulated substance.

I have used oil-dri MANY times for picking up oils as heavy as No. 6 fuel oil - which is almost a wax at room temperature. The stuff IS a miracle.

I think I have everyone beat when it comes to 600W, a couple years ago I had a 5 gallon metal pail of 600W that was almost empty, wanting to save space I put 1 gallon into a plastic milk carton, set it on the shelf and forgot about it until the plastic split and dumped the whole gallon that was up about 5 foot off the floor. I'm still trying to clean it up!

Right after I bought my Model A, I went out and bought a bale of oil absorbent pads. They work miracles in cleaning up oil, even 600W. After 4+ years, I'm now on my second bale.

And putting a little mineral spirit on the oily patch and stir it around a little before putting the oil dry on the spill. Also over apply the oil dry and thay way you can use it over and over again. I have a couple closed 5 gal cans of oil dry that I have been using at least 10 years and it still works very well.

I had the same problem when using an empty plastic milk jug. That is some junk plastic that is made to self destruct in short order. Sure wish more glass was used, like in the good old days.

After having several of the really thin milk jugs crack open on my driveway, full of used oil, I only use the heftier gallon jugs like the ones that windshield washer fluid, antifreeze, bleach etc. for my used oil.

I have never heard of the absorbent pads. Where do you buy them ?
Thanks, Wayne

At your handy-dandy local "Environmental Equipment & Industrial Supplies for Oil & Hazmat Cleanup" supply store. In Alaska it's Unitech of Alaska. They soak up oil but not water. Works GREAT!
