60 hp transmission

Did ford in 1940 put a column shift (side shift) trans with their 60 hp v8. If so was it a smaller trans like the 37,38 and 39 top loader was ? or did they only have the small top loader for all four years? I am speeking of passenger cars, not trucks. Hope my question isn't too confusing.

Jim,
In 1940 the V8 60 trans was a side shift and at a glance it appears to
be the same as the 85 hp trans. In fact the bell face is unique and has the 60 hp
bolt pattern and starter accommodation. As far as I know it is a 1 year only
trans and uses 85 hp size internals. If interested I have a few of these .

Thanks Charlie, I forgot about the starter accommodations. I mostly questioned it because of the size. I just looked small. It would take a flashlight to find out tonight. So tomorrow I will know.

I think you'll find that the 40 60hp hade the same trans as the 85hp engine. The 37-39 60hp trans was smaller. The early 60hp trans had a small input clutch spline. The 40 was the same as the bigger engine 1-3/8 spline. I remember when I was a teenager a friend ruined a 60 engine in his fathers 40 pickup. We pulled the engine and installed an 85 hp engine with no problem. Walt

one last note on this....Ford did produce a Commercial toploader trans for the V8-60 pickup/commercial velicles for 1937-39. It was a toploader (floor shift) with the bell housing for the 60hp motor BUT a larger case.....made to accept the 85hp gear set. It would have had the 37-38 type gears/synchro with the 85hp type shifter tower and forks. As far as I know, this trans was not placed in regular passenger cars but I suppose it's possible Ford would have equipped some special order fleet cars with this trans if the buyer specified it rather than the normal stock 60hp ******.
