I am in the process of getting my av8 roadster on the road and need a generator that mounts a fan, Ive been looking for a early 39 with the big nut because they do not have a cut out but i cant find one. is there a company that can convert a 33-38 6 volt fan mount type generator to a 12 volt? thanks for any help or advice!

Yes, but I can't think of the name right off. Why are you changing to 12 volts? These old cars ran on 6 volts for years with no problems. Make certain all of your connections are good and clean, your cables are the large 6 volt cables, and grounds are clean. I run 6 volts and I have no problems. Starts soon as I hit the button.

Any of the auto electric shops which deal with antique car electric systems can probably convert a fan-mount generator to 12v. One such place advertises in the V8 Times:

Well a 6volt gen will not really adapt to 12volt very well without at least changing the field coils over to 12volt ones. These can be sourced from an early ford falcon 12volt generator or bought new repro. The 6volt armature will work OK but not as efficient as a 12volt armature and will take a few more revs to get it charging. You could then use a diode cutout as Kurt said or use a 12volt voltage regulator (round one) on top made by funproducts. Regards, kevin.

Try this guy L. D. Becker 419 668 5956 or 419663 5122 . or FIFTH AVE. PARTS @WWW.FIFTH AVEINTRNETGARAGE.COM

It will cost $600+ to convert your generator to an alternator. I believe your 6v generator will put out 12v without modifying it. I converted to 12 GM alternator and painted it black for $60.

I suspect you don't read Early V-8 Times from the Early Ford Club of America. In the classifieds for many years is an advertisement by Ed Whitney. He produces wonderful alternators converted from original generators (you send a core). I am using one on a built 59A so I can use the fan high in my 1934 radiator. His contact details are: Ed Whitney Buena Park, CA (714) 773-1611.
Here's an early generator conversion. You don't have to run the cutout because it is just for "show".
