6 volt generator with a 12 volt B Series/Circuit regulator

Hi
I'm putting an 8BA Flathead in a 1930 Ford Sedan and want to convert it to a 12 volt system. An old Auto electric friend told me I could use the 6 volt generator with a 12 volt B series/circuit regulator w/o changing the 6 volt generator to a 12 volt generator, Has anyone ever heard of this or done this?
Thanks

Yes, the six volt gen will work with twelve volts if you use a twelve volt regulator. I did it years ago on a 41 Ford and it is still working. You can also mate a later Ford generator to the flathead front plate and pulley to give a true twelve volt generator if you want.

Yes, the commonest type of '56-about '63 Ford generator, the low amp standard equipment one, is dimensionally right and you can just transplant the whole body onto yours. I believe you'll need to use the later rear cover as armature and its bearing differ back there.

The later rear cover has a mounting ear on it. You can cut or grind it off, not too hard as the cover is stamped steel.

A PS for the 4-cylinder people: The late flathead generator had separate brackets for 6 and 8 cylinder Fords. The 6 cylinder bracket is similar in actual mounting type tp Model A and B generators and I think could be adapted pretty easily, and wide belt pulleys were available 0n all '49 Fords and on '48-52 trucks to fit these. This would give a very good 6 volt regulated generator that can easily be converted to 12 V for those so inclined.
