6 volt blinkers

I installed blinkers on my 46 ford a few years back and the other day I was checking them out and noticed they blink very fast and erratically. What I mean by erratically is they start off flashing and go faster and faster and then it starts all over. Bad 6v flasher ? Ground maybe ? Any thoughts.

I struggled with the same for a long time trying everything but replacing the flasher but that turned out to be the problem and the solution. They ain't much. Just replace it. It'll probably fix it.

I believe its all about Resistance .Get higher wattage bulbs or wire one extra near the Flasher I have 2 12 volt bulbs that flash under the dash on my 6 volt system .one left one right ,

Agree with Prof. Henry on flasher unit. Went through three from NAPA until I found a good one. Think they are made in Mexico.

Flashers are made for different amount of bulbs for trailers or passenger cars. More bulbs equal more amp load. The flasher is a sensitive circuit breaker that trips on and off from the amp load. More bulbs or higher wattage bulbs will make it trip or flash on and off faster. G.M.

Thanks for all of the comments. Ill have to run up to Napa and see if they even have a 6v flasher. The flasher that I have came in one of those blinker kits so its more than likely an el cheapo. As a matter a fact I think I got it from Macs.
Thanks again.

I think NAPA's part # for a three prong six volt flasher is 535, or perhaps that's the type. My old one was a Wagner made in the USA. It worked for 10 years before it quit. The new ones came from Taiwan...initially thought Mexico. First one was bad, second one works like a charm!! Call them before you go. They had to order mine. Think I paid less than $10.

Thanks Dick... I think thats what Ill do today after I get home from work. I might even try Oreillys and see what they have.
Thanks again.

There is a Menonnite shop named Wilmers in New Holland or Bear, Pa. on Rt, 23 that makes wagon wheels and supplies parts for horse dawn buggies. I bought a number of Wagner 6 volt flashers from them about 15 or 20 years ago. They sell them for buggies with 6 volt lights. They told me at the time Wagner told them they were not going to make the 6 volt flashers any more. Wagner had about 2,000 in stock at the time and Wilmer bought all of them. I paid about $2.50 for them. They may be on the internet as they have computers. 1-717-656-3411 G.M.
