59T-7006 ******

Pulled engine and trans from my 52 F1 with v8. It has a 4 speed 59T-7006 trans. While starting to scrape and clean 70 years of mud and grease I noticed the 3 elevations on the shift plate which face the clutch and pressure plate housing and also 3 which face to the rear which have what my parts catalog call 3/4” expansion plugs (74113-S). The catalog says 4 are required. Pictures below

1. The 3 that face pressure plate housing don’t seem to have any plugs in them. Are they just open or should they also have the expansion plugs in them? Does anyone know if these are available?

2. Can I unbolt the gear shift housing and lift it straight up or is it attached internally to something? I put ****** in neutral before removing shifter.

3. My final question is on the left side of the shifter housing, see picture, is something that looks like cork. Was cork used at times to seal or plug a hole?

One final question that just came to me. When I disconnected speedometer cable from trans, there was 2-3 inches of cable that stayed in trans opening. I thought speedo cable was all one piece from trans to dash. Is my cable broke or is there some kind of connection within the cable housing?

Sorry this is long and several questions but I appreciate all you knowledgeable people! Merry Christmas to all!

unbolt top cover and lift off, the three holes for/aft are the shift lever shafts/tension springs/balls and are suppossed to have caps, the cork plug is just crud in the hole to take the top shifter apart

Thanks Alanwoodieman! Do you know if these plugs are available and where I could order them?

For plugs, just go to Napa, oreillys, auto zone, etc, for expansion plugs. Nothing special about them that would warrant shipping charges.

for the plugs check your local auto parts store. they carry the plugs in various sizes. got one for my 39 trans. and i think it was $.50.

My book indicates 6 each of those 3/4" plugs for the T8 or T9 spur gear 4-speed. VanPelt Sales lists them by part number.

The detent plungers, ball and springs are in that area where the cork looking item is. I'm not sure if it is a cork or what it is but it could have something to do with the passage drilled there into the detent area to aid in detent/shaft installation or for a case vent. A person would have to look at it real close to see if it has a small hole in it. Most cases are vented to prevent pressure from building during warm up in operation.

It's common on a lot of the early type transmissions to set the unit it neutral to remove the top and same for installation. This way all the forks are in their proper place to engage the corresponding grooves they have to fit into on the gears.
