59AB Water Pumps

Have been away from the "Barn" for a while so have lost sight of all the good references. As I recall a Barn member was highly recommended as a source for highly efficent water pump rebuild/manufacture. Can't remember his name, but would appreciate anyone that remembers the conversations on these pages.

Old Henry, Price? They are probably made by 12 year old Chinese girls. Buy American. Are you suggesting Skip's pumps are the same quality as offshore pumps? If so, it is my humble opinion you are wrong. Skip's are great quality.

No intent to criticize Skip's. I just got the higher efficiency ones from C&G for less years ago and they've worked fine. Skip's are probably good too. Just more expensive.

The other so called high efficiancy pumps deliver 80 gallons each in 5 minutes, Skips do 110 gallans and stock is 65. I doubt any replacement pumps are tested after being aasembled. Everyone of Skips pumps are tested for at least 5 minutes on a water pump test machine. After the flow test high pressure is applied in the system to furthur check the seal for leaks. Every pump tested is recorded on a test sheet and kept on file. Any little variation in test results and the pump is disassembled and the problem corrected then retested. He has modified a number of sets of the other "high efficiancy" pumps. I was there one day when he was testing a set he had modified when he called me over the the test area. One of the pumps was putting out about 25 gallons. We looked at it closely and found a build up of cast iron inside blocking the water passage beside the bolt above the water outlet neck. We drilled a 5/16" hole in the bottom of pump and went in with a long shaft carbide burr and removed the material and the pump tested OK after welding the hole. I feel it is nessesary to test every pump. This includes oil pumps before installing. G.M.

I have had two sets of '35's and one set of '37-'48 original Ford pumps rebuilt by Skip Haney. It doesn't get any better than having original parts rebuilt in the USA that give improved performance while keeping an American employed in a job that greatly benefits our hobby.

Thanks to all that have responded, exactly as I had hoped for. On to UPS as soon as I can pull the pumps off the block. The engine, by the way is installed in a '35 Pick up.

Do you send him good cores for rebuild? And how much is "Alot More Expensive"?

Not sure who your question was directed to. I have sent Skip original pump cores that had Ford PN's so they could be used on show cars if I decide to go in that direction. A set of pumps rebuilt by Skip is about $200.00 + $12.00 shipping. I believe Speedways pumps are about $89.00 each. Not sure what Bob Drake and Dennis Carpenter are selling theirs for but I'm betting they are made in China as are the ones from Speedway.

Well said, I could not agree more:D

That's not any higher than the "catalog" pumps I bought for a 59AB. And they sound like much better quality control.
Ditto what JM 35 Sedan said as well.

I also would agree with John "JM". I have a set that Skip rebuilt for me on our '39 CS and I'm very pleased with them. Next time I need water pumps for one of our Flatheads I'll be sending them to Skip. Price should not be the primary factor when dealing with Flatheads, experience, knowledge and reputation of a vendor should come into play as well. Vic
