59AB oil pan

Does anyone have experience or knowlege about cutting a slot in the lower bellhousing area of the 59ab flathead oil pan to facilitate remove/replace the flywheel without removing the pan ? Thanks, Bill

That was a factory pan used on some commercial engines. You could not get the flywheel out but you could change the clutch without removing the whole pan. The trans still had to come out but it saved some time. The pan area under the flywheel unbolted but left the starter. It is refered to as a two piece pan.

flathead4dr-

Andy is correct about the two piece oil pan. I believe it was used on engines that had an 11" clutch. I have one of these pans on my '35. It bolts on without any modification.

There are a couple of advantages with this pan that are not found with the regular pan. First, it allows a limited inspection of the clutch and disk without having to pull the engine apart and second, when the back piece is removed it makes the removal of the oil pan "somewhat" easier (still a nasty job!).

Those pans were mostly in trucks and some industrial applications as was allready mentioned. You still see them now and then on E-pay.

Hey 4dr: So I can assume the trans is gone, and you can cut from the inside of the bellhousing area?? I would not cut to much in the starter mount area, but all the way up on the driver side, for more access, all you need is room to drop the flywheel through, right ?? A door if you will ?? Thats what the two piece pan dose... Leaves the starter area intake, and open all the way up on the driver side,
NOTE: I need a flywheel for 59ab 10 inch, will trade 49/53 wheel good shape. .

Yes, the ****** is removed and just got to thinking that this is a bunch of bull having to drop the pan just to change the flywheel and or clutch assy. So, I will do as you have suggested and cut a "window" in the bottom, but leave the starter mount area as intact as possible. When done, I will make a bolt together cover that will re-strengthen the modified area. This will probably initially take more time than the alternative, but in the future will be appreciated....probably by me !
Thanks to all. Bill
