Putting together a 59AB out of parts pile, I picked a cam gear marked with a +3 on it... This is one of those times I am reminded that I am far from knowing everything...
Does anyone know what this indicates?
Thanks for your input! Karl
My old Mercury overhaul manual has a statement where the cam gear backlash is being checked about using a +.003" gear if the lash is too loose. Like Bruce mentioned you used to be able to get those. Now days you have to get your mains line bored and honed to reduce the backlash between the gears but that's not such a bad thing. Most of the old motors could use to be trued up a bit.
It's a .003 oversize gear. They used to use them guite often with an in chassis motor job. If the crank gear is worn some it's easier to change the cam gear than than removing the crank gear. Walt
