59 Galaxie 500 292 Engine Rebuild

Had a friend come over this evening to give me an educated opinion about my engine. We had it running and he adjusted the valves. I trust him as he has had 50's Fords,Merc's and Lincolns since they came out.
Prognosis is not good. Best educated guess is bad rod bearing(s).
In the trunk of the car I found a complete gasket kit, rod bearings, main bearings and a piston ring kit. The parts are dated 1999. The bearings are still sealed in plastic but the ring kit shows a few rust areas on some of the rings.
The bearings are all 10 over. I guess the past owner was planning on a rebuild.
I will pull the motor/trans and put it on a stand. I really want to approach this in a less-invasive method so I will leave the heads on for now. I will start on the bottom end 1st. If the crank journals are not scored can I get new standard bearings? I would like to avoid turning the crank if possible. I want to avoid a complete tear down for now.
Thoughts?

If it's already knocking it's too late for new bearings. Crank is going to have to be reground. With the engine being 50+yrs old I would tear it down to see what I have & what I need. May already have an undersized crank or cylinders that have been bored oversize. Doing it "cheap" now will probably come back to bite you. Only cheap way to do it now is to pick up a good running used engine.

Please, never "assume" a bearing size. The only way to know is to mike the shaft at the rod journals and main bearing journals. This can be done by any competent auto machine shop. Each journal should be measured, measured again 90 degrees from the first, then each end of each journal in each place. You need to know size, barrel shape, and taper. Then decide from there.

I should have clarified. The "new 1999" bearings in the trunk are all "10 over" which is marked on the boxes. Judging by the amount of Georgia mud mixed with leaking oil all these years on the motor I would say it has never been apart.
Thanks for everyone's input.

you will not know crank size till tou pull a rod and main cap, the size will be stamped on the bearing, as for piston size you will have to pull a head to find that out
