59 A-B starter clearance

I have read several threads regarding starter replacement and having to grind for clearance with the modern style spring. It appears to be a bit larger in diameter than the old one. I struggled a while trying to get the thing in and quit. (I am considering using the old set up) Where do you grind? The bottom face of the hole? I am 73 and already had carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists. Not up for that again. Update: Ha, originally posted this in Q&A. Oops. Explains the crickets. I ended up using the original Bendix. The modern one I got with the new starter would not fit. I used some thin clear plastic to make temporary nuts to hold the thing together until I got the bolts started. Not the easiest starter to replace. Sun is definitely going down on my wrenching days.
