57 Monarch, push button park not working.

Hey guys,

Now that the brakes and exhaust are tightened up, I would like to figure out why Park doesn't seem to do anything. It has the push button automatic. I've been using the E Brake to keep the car from rolling. I also noticed, you can start the car in any gear, so the neutral safety switch isn't working either.

I've searched online for any instructions on removing/fixing this pushbutton setup, can't seem to find anything.

Any help is appreciated.

- IN MY OPINION ONLY AND ONLY -

You need to find a WORKSHOP MANUAL for the car. MERC-LINC-EDSEL had a bunch of features not used on the FORD.

I have a 57 and 58 MERC WSM (US) and would gladly scan and post the pages but I cannot figure out how to .pdf them.

I would be very concerned with just the handbrake to hold the car. Carry a wheel chock ... ;)

You don't have to pdf them, just make a copy and mail them. You will have to get his mailing address.

As K points out those are an odd part. So the manual would certainly help, but more help might be in the local Edsel club. One of the leading Edsel guys in the country is in my area, but I haven’t seen Paul or his car (a beautiful yellow Edsel wagon, with a 390 tripower) in some years now. But those guys probably saved more of the push button units and know the work arounds and parts sources than most others.

Yeah, I have done that several times but I think most don't want to give their addy to someone they don't know (especially if they don't know what state they live in ... ;) )

I did that once and when I came home, the toilet was overflowing and the cat was pregnant ... :(

Kultulz, any chance you could take pics of those pages in the manual with your cell phone and text/email them to me? If so, I can send you my cell number in a private message. (if that is available on this forum)

I'm likely going to show the car to my Dad Thursday evening, I have as much done on the car as I reasonably can do right now, winter is coming, have other stuff going on etc...

Fixing the park issue is not critical before Thursday, the E-Brake works VERY well. ;-)

It doesn't look as complicated as the Edsel Teletouch system. They were a nightmare when they put all that stuff in the middle of the steering wheel. It didn't go over well with owners at the time. If it's on the dash, it may be more Iike the old push button Chrysler cars. They were a cable quadrant set up. If it's vacuum or electric then it could be problematic.

The 58 EDSEL had TELE-TOUCH in the center of the steering wheel.

I will try that in the later A.M.

I am still curious what the POWER BOOSTER thingie is on the dash.

I'll get back.

OK, finally found the manual. Had my little thumbscrew take photos and sent to me.

They are small. I don't know if they will show correctly -

That's my fault. For some reason when I download a photo it will only display small.

Being computer illiterate, I am not able to figure out how to correct it.

I am having trouble uploading WSM photos (too small) now regarding the 57 MERC AT.

... guess not ...

If you purchase the CD, you can download it directly.

Looking at the button mechanism from a u-tube video, it reminds my of the way the old push button radios worked. N/S was neutral/safety switch which would place the transmission in neutral if selected from any other gear. There should be a switch that is pushed or pulled by the mechanism to get the start function to work in neutral. If it won't go all the way into park then the linkage will likely need adjustment. Most transmission have to go a long way into the park zone on the transmission selector arm to get the park pawl to engage the lock mechanism. It may not be moving enough. There may also be a reverse/park inhibitor system that keeps the car from going in reverse or park until all motion is stopped. I saw an inhibitor switch for these on flea-pay.

No response -

There are seven pages. Maybe if you try to download you can enlarge them when you go to print?
