57 kick panel sheet metal rusted out

Hi All,

I have some rust on/in my A pillar on my 57 wagon. So far the rust is in the sheet metal above the structural portion..... My Question is how is this joint put together? I can see about replacing the sheet metal portion-PIA but doable. I know there is an order to what goes in first and how it gets stacked. This is just incase I need to really tear into it.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike, the ol' saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words" could
help the members here, to see the rust (weak spot) in the A pillar
and possibly give you the best advice in repairing it...;)

OK, here is what I am working with-or lack there of depending on how you look at it. The A pillar sheet metal is shot (as evidence of the holes) I have a new floor pan and I can save most of the toe board in that spot. Just not sure how to cut it out and then piece it back together-order wise.

You are saying A-PILLAR. Do you mean the actual hinge pillar is rusted out? The A-PILLAR would be next to the windshield itself.

Can you show a photo taken further out?

Re: 57 A pillar

K, I was referring to whole thing as the A pillar. Did not realize that part is area around the windshield. I am working on the bottom down at the base of the kick panel where the toe board/kick panel/floor pan come together. I will take a larger pic when I get home.

You're OK, I just needed to know what section you need.

See if the ILL shows large enough to show (BPN 02403). You are most likely going to need a donor depending on the damage -

Here are some more expanded pics of what I am working on plus my thoughts on replacing the metal.

Here is where I stand so far.
1) The kick panel I believe curves out at the bottom covering the front top of the rocker panel correct?

2) Looking at Guenther's rocker repairs it looks like I can cut out most of the top of the outer rocker panel (the hatched area). If I leave about an inch front, outside, and rear I should not have to brace the body. Is this correct thinking?

If I understand the order correctly it should go like this (for the rockers/floor pans at least):
-The inner rocker fits into the outer rocker panel.
-Then the floor pans sit on top of the inner rocker 'flange'

Am I correct in my order for replacement?

Thanks,

Mike
