56 steering box in a 33 Ford

I have a friend who is thinking of doing the swap of a 56 F100 steering box into his 33 Ford. I have done a couple on Model A's that improved performance over the 7 tooth box, but somehow this seems not such a good move. Your thoughts gentlemen.

It's a vast improvement over the stock box. Depends on how original he wants to keep his car. I just finished rebuilding one that was converted for my friends 32

It has been done for years, you can use the F1 or the F100 boxes. The only big issues are the angle with the frame (can modify the box itself or use a wedge) and exhaust clearance. The F1 and F100 have different clearance issues. What is your concern?

I have done quite a few. In each case I modified the frame to fit the box rather than the other way around or use a wedge that sometimes doesn't fit too well.

Here is a pic of one with mods to stiffen the box when using a long pitman arm for racing.

I agree with Pete, I prefer to modify the frame and not the steering box. In my case it is just because I like to keep the car similar to what would of been done in the early to mid 50s. Don't see it done that way much now days, so I failed to bring it up! Thanks Pete

Here's one of our new boxes going in, F1 technology ,a no hassle bolt in job .Ted

Tell us more about this Ted, is that a original housing with some sort of conversion to modern innards? I have driven the conversion in one Model A and did not like it, seemed to require winding forever to make a turn.

Its all new remanufactured ,it looks like a 32-34 box but has a modern inside better steering and takes the light switch ,for the 32 as well ,these will be on my web site soon ,Ted

I've seen and test driven Ted's new steering box in his 34 sedan and can vouch for the superior handling qualities. Best of all look under the hood and there is no way of telling that it's not stock! I'm putting them into my 34 Roadster and 34 Cabriolet. They are going to revolutionise and upgrade the everyday usability of our early model Ford cars.

I forgot to say it's a really easy bolt-on easy installation - no wedges or frame modifications that put me off the earlier steering box upgrade ideas. I'm sure Henry would have approved!

I thought that the 56 box might not be a vast improvement over the 2 tooth in the 33 like it is in my case where it replaced a 7tooth. Sounds like modifying the frame to take it is better than modifying the box as is the case with the Model A? Is that a fair assumption from what I read below?

The later boxes ARE a vast improvement that is why people go to the trouble of switching them out. My guess would be that the majority of folks who perform this mod would believe that the modified box and/or wedge is the best way to do the installation. A relative small minority would prefer the frame mods, I just happen to be one of the minority!

Is it a rolling sector, like a 37 and up Gemmer III box?

I am very interested in what you have to offer.

Thanks,

Neal

Do you need to send a core for the "remanufacturing"? And for the million dollar question.....how much will they cost?
