Hi.. I have a scraping sound from the rear end on my 56 merc station wagon, I took the cover off today and all I can find is the spider shaft has some play in the housing.. Can this be the problem?? What do you think? (Sorry for my bad english)

Is the hole the spider shaft goes into "egg shaped"? If it is that usually makes a klunking sound when you put the car in gear. Sometimes they make a "chuckle" noise when turning. Can you give us more information about the scraping noise. Like do you hear it more driving slow, fast or turning.
Your english and spelling are just fine. A lot better than some that post here and other sites.

No egg shape what I can see.. The sound starts at around 20 mph and speeds up the faster I go, it reminds of a bake shoe touching the drum that was the first thing I thought was the problem but it ain't

If it's a continuous sound it could be a bad bearing, either pinion, carrier, or axle. Put the car on jackstands and run it to see if you can locate the sound. Just keep your body parts away from moving car parts!

A pinion bearing could be bad. If it whines while accelerating, or only on decelerating, would tell you which one. With the cost of labor today, if it must come apart, I would replace all the bearings. There should be play between the ring gear and the pinion, about .006 to .012 if memory serves me right.
