Just bought 56 merc with 312 and automatic, the motor seems a little loose. Question, should I replace with a 302 and AOD or rebuild 312,what performance difference should I expect.

I would keep the 312 for the cool factor, but that's just me. Adapters are available to mate it to an AOD. "Loose" as in...?

Yep,Get rid of that old worn out "Y Block" and replace it with something else. (Maybe a SBC).

That way you can sell me that old worn out "Y Block" carcass.
