56 368CU IN engine oil passages

I am building a 56 368 CU IN engine. During my preoiling of the engine when I first started my elect drill to turn the oil pump I got a stream of oil that shot up 3" out of the valley ( hydrulic Valve lifter area) at the front Left hand side near the first lifter. I found that there is a drilled passage that goes down about 7" to wehat I think is the Horizonal oil passage for the valve lifters? I cannot figure out why this passage is even there, there is no need for any oil to be supplied to the valley. I am thinking that this oil passage was drilled to permit a path to drill another oil passage for the lifters.and this oil passage hole chould be plugged. I put a "S" drill bit .348" in this hole and I restarted my drill and I got 20 psi on my direct reading gage and oil flow through the engine.

Is anybody familiar with this engine and this oil passage? I can't find a plug that is small enough to put in this hole and there is no threads in there either. I guess I will have to machine a plug out of alum to about a .350" andtap down the hole?

Thanks for any replies.

I am not familiar with the engine but are you rotating the pump in the correct direction? This would explain why the hole is there - it would be a drain hole for the valley.

Yes I am rotating it counterclockwise the direction of the distruibutor goes when the engine is running. I get plenty of oil pressure (20PSI). There is a sepretate drain hole in the valley for the oil to return to the oil pan. This is definitely an oil drill passage and probably only neede to get access to a wya to drill another drill passage. This passage needs to be plugged I'm sure. I just wanted to get some confermation on my thoughts.

If anybody out there is familiar with the 56/57 Lincoln 368 cu in Big "Y" block engine, i'm sure they will know what I am talking about.

Thanks for your reply
