55 UTE & paint question

G`day George,

I might be able to shed some light on your engine colour , just a theory though.
I have seen a few Y blocks over the years and a lot of our `56 and `57 Mainlines have traces of that blue/green paint on them , underneath a dark grey. A Canadian part book that I have lists ASQ , ATQ and AVQ engine prefixes as Australian Export engines for `55 `56 and `57 ,all 272s .
The engines in `55 Canadian Meteors were painted that blue/green , and I am fairly sure that they had black valve covers , with no decals .I reckon that the engines got a coat of dark grey paint when they got here . I was talking to an old bloke that was an ex Ford Dealer mechanic once , and he had just finished restoring his `54 Aussie Customline with a dark grey flathead motor and he told me that was the colour they came out with , possibly kept on painting them grey for a few more years.
I did see an original `55 Mainline with traces of the U.S Ford `54 256
Ivory with Red valve covers.

Sorry if the info is all over the place , but we really did get a mix of parts down here.

You were correct with the tie-downs behind the seat , there was also one in the back of the cargo area , below the hooks for your tonneau cover.
I think you stowed the wooden braces for your tonneau with this strap , with the hooks placed in the bracket on the driver`s side .

Anyhow , have fun with your Ute.
Regards,
John.

Hi George,

This is the car I imported into the US back in 1992. So glad it's gone to an obviously good home. In the meantime, lots of great work has been done... as you see comparing my photos. The car looks better than I do now!

The ute came from Queensland, spent it's life on the farm (of course) ...and showed it. Had lots of mud and dust all over it, the original 272, an odometer that didn't work (so no idea of miles) and a huge sunvisor, which I thought was cool but I guess a subsequent owner didn't. The sunvisor got bent on shipping. Car started up right away at the docks and I drove it the 25 miles from Long Beach to Pasadena CA.

Had much enjoyment at car shows... you can't be shy owning this vehicle.

I got the Northern Territory plate because it's the only state that has the word Australia on it. Amazing that it's still with the car.

Have lots of stories which I can share with you sometime... in the meantime, enjoy some photos.

Trevor J.
Long Beach CA.
