My wife's 55 Bird has an original Ford o matic that leaks like the BP gusher...How difficult is it to mate a C-4 trans to the original 292 CI Y-block?? All advise will be appreciated...
Flat-o Matic also has a kit for the conversion. The C-4 is a good trans and a perfect fit for an early TBird. Smaller and less parasitic than the Fordo. You can uses the stock shifter with the C'4, but usually you will be unable to manually shift into first because there are not enough detents in the shifter. The kickdown is another probelm.
THat said, I am planning to do this conversion this winter.
Or just move on up to an overdrive automatic. There are kits available to put an AOD behind a Y-block. With the lock-up converter and overdrive 4th gear, that 'Bird will just glide down the highway! AOD's up to about 1993 did not have any electronics, just mechanical linkage from the carb/throttle body to the trans...not that much different from your 'Bird's Ford-O-Matic!
